HRDC conducts “in country” training programmes for national-level human rights organisations and activists. Senior HRDC staff, usually in coordination with or sponsorship from a local organisation, help train local human rights activists in using international mechanisms to improve their effectiveness at home. Recent training programmes include a summer 2000 and a winter 2000 training programme with South Asia Human Rights Documentation Centre (SAHRDC) in Jakarta, Indonesia. Prospective training programmes are planned in coordination with SAHRDC for winter 2000/2001 in Kathmandu, Nepal and New Delhi, India.
Training programmes ordinarily last one week and, according to local needs, can include:

basic and in-depth information about international human rights law;
basic and in-depth information about international humanitarian law (including the Geneva Conventions, case law of the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda tribunals, and developments concerning the International Criminal Court);
logistics and practical strategies for using international human rights mechanisms (including UN special procedures and treaty bodies);
practicums in writing appeals to UN Special Rapporteurs and UN Working Groups;
practicums in composing written and oral submissions to the UN Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights and the UN Commission on Human Rights;
strategies for creating, using, critiquing, and strengthening national human rights institutions;
information and logistics for utilising the 1998 UN Declaration on Human Rights Defenders and the 2000 Special Representative on Human Rights Defenders;
in-depth information about the importance of the 2001 World Conference Against Racism and possibilities for participation; and
using internet-based resources for research and activism.
